Zion I - Coastin' (Music Review)

Song: Coastin'
Artist: Zion I
Album: The Take Over

"When life brings trouble, you can fight or run away, I have no struggle, relax watch me float away."

What it Sound Likes: It's a hip hop song. The rap sounds kind of like Jay-Z and a little bit of Lil Wayne. The chorus sounds like R&B with some hip hop and techno.

Complaints:
I think the songs really good and I only have a couple of small complaints. First, the piano intro doesn't really fit in with the rest of the song, and when the piano and the techno "sounds" (I guess) don't really go together that well. The same thing for when the singer sings along to the rap. Also, the song is pretty repetitive. Its pretty much the chorus, a rap, the chorus, then another rap.

Review (on a scale of one to ten):

Beat: 10
The beat is really nice and unique, and they change it up throughout the song with techno, singing the beats, drums, and clapping. It goes with the song really well and I can't find anything bad to say about it.

Lyrics: 7
The lyrics are about how the artist started out "in the Ay" and at "Kinko's", and then "ten years later out to Vegas on a G4". Its just about the artists success and how he started out working a dead end job, and now he's rich and living this glamorous life and "coastin'" through life. This seems really typical to me. I have heard a dozen songs about how people started out poor, unhappy, or as criminals, then made it to Hollywood and feeling like they're on top of the world. Even though its repetitive, it still is inspiring and actually did happen to this artist, and most people watching this just want a catchy song to listen to.

Personality: 9
For me, the personality of this song was pretty weird. The chorus "I'm coastin, I'm coastin' on a dream" sounds really laid back. While the techno part right after and the rap sounds really happy and exciting. I can kind of understand this. Right now, he coasting through life and has "no struggle". So he would have a reason to be laid back, since he doesn't have anything to worry about. On the other hand, according to this song he is also in Vegas. That would explain the happy and exciting parts. I don't know if this is intentional or I'm just thinking too hard about it.

Beat: 10
Lyrics: 7
Personality: 9
Overall Score: 8.7

If you like R&B or Hip Hop get this song.
